For decades Gilbert was the center of South Carolina's peach industry, with farms surrounding the town shipping fruit out by the truckload through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. What started in 1958 as a small community gathering grew into the Lexington County Peach Festival, now one of the largest Independence Day events in the Southeast and still sponsored by the Gilbert Community Club every year on the Fourth of July. The orchards themselves mostly disappeared decades ago as the land around Gilbert shifted toward residential use, but the town has held onto its small-town identity even as the rest of Lexington County has grown up around it. Main Street still anchors the town today, with the festival drawing tens of thousands of visitors back every summer.
