Known locally as the Capital of Lake Murray, Chapin started out as a small railroad town in 1889, then watched the lake swallow up most of its original farmland when the Saluda River was dammed in 1927. A Look at Chapin
Chapin was incorporated on Christmas Eve, 1889, after local landowner Martin Chapin donated the ground for its first streets. The town stayed a small railroad stop for decades until 1927, when the damming of the Saluda River to create Lake Murray flooded most of the farms and homesteads Chapin families had worked for generations. The lake that took their land also became the town's defining feature: Chapin is effectively cut off from the rest of Lexington County by the water itself, reachable mainly by looping around the lake or crossing the Dreher Shoals Dam. These days Chapin calls itself the Capital of Lake Murray and has grown well past its original railroad-town footprint into a popular spot for Columbia commuters and weekend boaters alike.

What Makes Chapin Different
Chapin's water and sewer setup is split in an unusual way. The town owns and operates its sewer system outright, along with only a small stretch of water lines around Amick's Ferry Road and part of Columbia Avenue, while the City of Columbia owns and operates most of the water mains that actually serve Chapin customers, with the town buying that water wholesale and passing it through. The sewer side has had its own strain: two of the town's main twelve-inch force mains have failed during heavy rain in the past, which pushed the town toward a sewer master plan and a new parallel force main meant to cut down on overflow risk. Add in a utility department that stays intentionally small for a town growing this fast, and homeowners here sometimes deal with pressure drops or backups that trace back to the municipal side rather than anything inside the house.
