Batesburg and Leesville grew up back to back on "the Ridge," the high ground separating the Saluda and Edisto river basins in the far western part of Lexington County. Leesville incorporated first, in 1875, with Batesburg following two years later, and for more than a century the two towns ran their own governments and schools despite sharing little more than a property line between them. A joint high school in the 1920s and a combined chamber of commerce in 1946 slowly pulled the two closer, and in January 1992 voters finally approved consolidating into one town. The old rail line still splits downtown into North and South Lee Street, and every May the town fills up for the South Carolina Poultry Festival, a nod to the poultry processing industry that remains one of the area's largest employers.
