Believe it or not, summer is right around the corner. The kids will be out of school, we’ll all be spending some much needed time outside, and our homes will be prepared for all of the summer barbecues and gatherings. While we’re thinking about all of these fun summer activities, it’s also time to make sure your plumbing system is prepared for the new season.
Before you start up the grill for your first family barbecue, make sure you cross these tasks off your list.
Check for Leaks
These long winters can definitely take a toll on your plumbing system, so the start of summer is the perfect time to check your home for leaks. Individually check all water sources both inside and outside your house, including faucets, showerheads, and pipes under the sinks. Make sure to check your water heater, bathtubs, and toilets too.
Know Where Your Main Water Valve is Located
Summertime calls for family vacations, which means you might be leaving your house at some point in the season for a full week or more. To avoid any water mishaps while you’re soaking up the sun on a beach somewhere, it’s best to know where your main water valve is located so you can shut off the water supply while you’re away. The shutoff valve in some houses is in the basement or utility room, while other homes might have one outside in the yard.
Test Your Sump Pump
Before the summer rain arrives, test your sump pump to make sure it’s ready to endure all of the water from the thunderstorms. Simply pour a bucket of water into it and the pump should immediately activate, process the water, and shut off. If this doesn’t happen, call Dr Rooter Of Lexington at (803) 398-2090 and we’ll come out and check your system.
Take Care of Your Garbage Disposal
Many people think that all types of food can go down a garbage disposal, but they are not meant to endure large amounts of food, such as banana peels, bones, and fats from cooked meats. Make sure all of those summer fruits and vegetables make it into the garbage can, not the disposal!
Before the start of summer, check your sprinklers thoroughly for leaks. You can also check the sprinkler heads and if there are any that are damaged or rusty, replace it with a new head.
