Don't Remodel Without a Plumbing Permit

Plumbing permits are often seen as an annoyance and one more hassle to slow your progress. These pieces of paper get a bad name because no one ever talks about what can happen without them.

There are a number of reasons to obtain a permit, even if it’s not technically required or won’t be noticed. We’re going to discuss why you should always have a permit for kitchen renovations or bathroom remodeling projects.

No Licensed Professional Would Encourage It

“noprofessional”

To put this simply, licensed plumbers know what they’re doing and can easily stay within the codes that are set forth by a plumbing permit. Professionals also know permits aren’t difficult to obtain and won’t put your project on hold.

With this said, licensed contractors aren’t going to encourage you to skip this step. Actually, the ‘plumbers’ that typically do want you to overlook this piece of paper are the ones that have no clue what they’re doing.

Or, they don’t care that their work is subpar. This could put you in a bind when your plumbing inevitably fails. Chances are, you won’t be able to locate this ‘contractor’ to fix his work, or if you do find him, he will charge you exorbitant rates to fix HIS mistake.

You should also consider that when dealing with plumbing, you’re dealing with water… and when dealing with water, there is the potential for problems that require insurance claims. Many homeowner’s insurance companies will not pay claims that occur because of shoddy workmanship.

You May End Up Getting Fined

Penalty

Hopefully, if you get caught renovating your kitchen or bathroom without a permit, it happens in the beginning. The best case scenario is that very little work has been done, you pay the fine, get the permit, and move forward.

It’s not always that easy, though. Realistically, you could be caught in the middle or toward the end of your bathroom or kitchen remodeling project. The city can come in, place a stop work order and decide any additions made need to be removed.

This removal is going to be expensive, and you’ll still end up having to obtain a permit for demolition. Then, you’ll have to start your project all over again, this time properly.

It May Not Meet Safety Standards

“safetystandards”

Part of the reason for cities requiring plumbing permits is for your safety. This might sound cliche, but it’s entirely accurate.

Plumbing installations that are done incorrectly, can leak. When leaks happen, mold and mildew occur. Aside from the cost of mold and mildew restoration, it is harmful to breathe in.

The growth of mold or mildew in your home can easily cause asthmatic problems and upper respiratory infections.
