Holiday Foods to Keep Out of Your Drains

A holiday feast

The holidays are approaching and it’s like we can smell the turkey roasting! The food that accompanies holiday celebrations is arguably one of the best parts of the season, coming in behind spending time with the family of course. However, a lot of households run into obstacles with their holiday foods when they attempt to dispose of the leftovers.

There are some types of foods that should never make their way into the garbage disposal, and should always go in the trash, we’ll be discussing a few of those in this blog post.

Eggshells

You’re probably not eating scrambled eggs with your Christmas dinner, but how about for your Christmas brunch or breakfast? Shells might seem harmless enough for your drains, but they can actually cause quite a few problems. They don’t break down quickly enough, and over time can cause blockages in your pipes. The same goes for coffee grounds as well! It’s best to toss these items in the trash.

Fibrous Foods

Celery, corn husks, artichokes, and asparagus, what do they have in common? They are fibrous vegetables that break apart into strings as they break down. These stringy strands get wrapped around the garbage disposal pieces or around other food scraps and cause nasty clogs.

Starches

Instead of scraping that macaroni or pasta salad into the garbage disposal, do it over a trash can instead. Large quantities of starchy foods like pasta, potatoes, rice break down into mush, and can form a gummy substance that backs up your garbage disposal and plumbing.
